Social Business Auditing – Culture Mapping

Corporate Culture Mapping - DandelionSince culture is so critical to social business success — and a main focus for us at SideraWorks — we’ve spent an immense amount of time determining how best we can help our clients develop their own healthy organizational cultures.

“Culture” is such a soft concept that it can be difficult for leadership to know how to address it in a meaningful way. It’s seemingly intangible, but it’s also an undeniably present thing. Like Justice Stewart famously said in his opinion from a Supreme Court case regarding pornography, ‘you know it when you see it’.

However, approaching culture solely as an abstract idea in a formal organization just isn’t viable for the long-term.

Painting conceptual pictures around culture — whether through stories and education or through visualization and imagery — is useful for defining a common language around culture. But conceptual illustration alone is next to useless for determining what cultural elements you need to address systematically, and whether or not your efforts are succeeding.

With that problem in mind, SideraWorks set to work developing a first in the industry.

We’ve created a set of culture mapping tools — based on proven methodologies — that are incredibly effective for assessing an organizations culture in a way that is easily repeatable, and measurable. First, they allow us to establish a baseline culture profile that will help us outline a development plan and the cultural initiatives we’ll undertake. Then along the way, we can use them to quickly evaluate the impact of those efforts and adjust accordingly. We can look at the organization as a whole as well as how different departments and business units reflect and contribute to the overall ethos of the company.

Culture can feel like an intimidating topic to tackle in your company, but it doesn’t have to be. We’re proud of the SideraWorks culture toolbox and our progressive approaches to culture development, and we’re eager to share them with you.
